This is the best option for people who want to experience both sides of Tambopata National Reserve. On this tour you will visit the Macaw Claylick (Collpas Chuncho), the largest one IN THE WORLD; and Lake Sandoval. Highly recommended for adventurers, nature and wildlife lovers.
DAY 2 – COLLPA CHUNCHO & KAYAK
We wake up very early, at 4:30 am, to go on an incredible journey by boat to the world’s largest macaw clay lick “ EL CHUNCHO”, a journey of about 1.5 hours by boat. On the way we will have the opportunity to see some species such as capybaras, which is the world’s largest rodents, tapirs, and you can even see the most beautiful South American feline, jaguar, many of our clients are witnesses with photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals.
After our arrival to the macaw clay licks you will see hundreds of parrots of different species that come to eat clay adjacent to the river on the wall. After a good breakfast, we will settle in our chairs to wait for the beginning of one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. Parrots are followed by 3 of the most colourful species of macaws of America, reds and greens, blues and yellows come to gather to eat clay needed in their daily diet and eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying over you. An experience for life!
We will then head back to our boat and flow down the river slowly looking for wildlife until we reach the lodge. We will have time for rest and then a delicious lunch.
In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to kayak the Tambopata River where we will move silently along the river, so we will have more opportunity to observe the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve. Or you can also relax by the pool.
In the late afternoon/early evening you will have the option to participate in a night walk where you can find amazing animals, amphibians and other wildlife that come out at night! The will be followed by dinner and good nights rest.
After breakfast, you’ll have the opportunity to choose between two unforgettable experiences in the heart of the Amazon (please coordinate with your guide):
Adventure Level: Active | Duration: Approx. 8 km hike
Embark on an exciting hike deep into the jungle to visit a mammal clay lick, a unique site where animals gather to feed on mineral-rich clay—essential for their digestion and health. With some luck, you may spot tapirs, capybaras, wild pigs, sloths, and more in their natural habitat.
Along the way, your guide will share fascinating insights into traditional hunting techniques used by local communities. After this immersive wildlife experience, we’ll return to the lodge where you’ll have more opportunities to observe colorful birds, butterflies, and playful monkeys including spider, capuchin, squirrel, and howler monkeys.
Adventure Level: Moderate | Duration: Short hike
Prefer a shorter hike with big views? Join us for a scenic walk through the forest leading to a spectacular canopy bridge, suspended over 40 meters above the jungle floor. From this breathtaking vantage point, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the rainforest canopy and a thrilling dose of adrenaline—all while keeping an eye out for birds and other treetop wildlife.
Afterwards, we’ll return to the lodge to relax and enjoy our final lunch in this incredible setting.
After lunch, we’ll board our boat for the return journey to Puerto Maldonado, arriving around 4:00 PM. From there, we’ll continue to Yacumama Lake, a serene and wildlife-rich destination ideal for spotting birds, caimans, and monkeys.
We’ll try our luck at piranha fishing as we take in the gorgeous Amazonian sunset, a perfect way to wrap up an unforgettable day. From the lake, we’ll head to our comfortable accommodation in Puerto Maldonado, followed by a delicious dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Today after a good breakfast at 9am we will head to Lake Sandoval, located in the National Reserve of Tambopata. It is the best way to see nature in its natural habitat including macaws, parrots, other bird species, monkeys, otters, caimans just to name a few. We will also have the opportunity to learn about different plant species, many which are used as natural medicines. The experience includes an easy walk along a wooden bridge for around 1 hour until we reach the lake, where we will canoe through the calm waters, observing monkeys, birds, caimans and with luck giant otters. We will spend the whole day exploring Lago Sandoval and have lunch at a lodge located on the lake.
After soaking in this awe-inspiring display of Amazonian wildlife, we will make our way back to Puerto Maldonado where you will be dropped off downtown; at the airport for those who have flights; or bus terminal.
