Itinerary

  • DAY 1 – WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE!

You will be picked-up at the airport or bus station and transferred to our office at Tambopata Hostel for a tour briefing. In case you have large luggage, we suggest that you repack and store any items that are not required. For those of you who arrive in the morning you will have time for breakfast at the hostal, have a shower and use the internet facilities before heading off.

You will be transferred by land by (4X4) wheeled truck to our destination that takes around 2 hours, reaching the banks of the Tambopata River. We will then take a half hour (depending on the water level) boat ride up river to “Collpas Tambopata Inn”. Upon arrival there will be a welcome reception followed by lunch.

In the afternoon we make an introductory walk into the rainforest where we will have the opportunity to see animals in their natural habitat such as amphibians, mammals, reptiles and wonderful insects, among others. We will also climb a 53m- canopy tower that has a fantastic panoramic view of the Amazon rainforest and where we will enjoy a magical sunset.

We will then head back to the lodge for a short rest. We will then head out on our night activity to look for caimans on the river. There are five species that live in this area and we will learn about the differences and hopefully catch one where you can have a close up encounter.

We will then head back to the lodge for dinner and a good night rest.

  • DAY 2 – COLLPA CHUNCHO & KAYAK

We wake up very early, at 4:30 am, to go on an incredible journey by boat to the world’s largest macaw clay lick “ EL CHUNCHO”, a journey of about 1.5 hours by boat. On the way we will have the opportunity to see some species such as capybaras, which is the world’s largest rodents, tapirs, and you can even see the most beautiful South American feline, jaguar, many of our clients are witnesses with  photographic evidence of encounters with these beautiful mammals.

After our arrival to the macaw clay licks you will see hundreds of parrots of different species that come to eat clay adjacent to the river on the wall. After a good breakfast, we will settle in our chairs to wait for the beginning of one of the most beautiful natural sights of birds in the world. Parrots are followed by 3 of the most colourful species of macaws of America, reds and greens, blues and yellows come to gather to eat clay needed in their daily diet and eliminate toxins. On a good day of activity you will see hundreds of these wonderful animals flying over you. An experience for life!

We will then head back to our boat and flow down the river slowly looking for wildlife until we reach the lodge. We will have time for rest and then a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon you will have the opportunity to kayak the Tambopata River where we will move silently along the river, so we will have more opportunity to observe the larger animals of the Tambopata Reserve. Or you can also relax by the pool.

In the late afternoon/early evening you will have the option to participate in a night walk where you can find amazing animals, amphibians and other wildlife  that come out at night! The will be followed by dinner and good nights rest.

  • DAY 3 – CANOPY BRIDGE & YACUMAMA

After a hearty breakfast this morning, we’ll set off on a short hike through the jungle, leading us to a breathtaking suspended canopy bridge. Towering over 40 meters above the forest floor, this bridge offers stunning views from the treetops—and an exhilarating adrenaline rush you won’t forget!

We will then head back to the lodge for our final lunch at this lodge. Our boat will
take you back to Puerto Maldonado after lunch arriving at around 4pm where our transfer will be waiting for us to take us to Yacumama Lake, a beautiful location for spotting wildlife such as birds, caimans and monkeys. Here we will try our luck at piranha fishing while enjoying a beautiful sunset. From here we head to our lodge know as Excelsa Tree House, about a 40 minute drive. Upon arrival we will check into rooms, which will be followed by a great dinner and well deserved rest.

  • DAY 4 – LAGO SANDOVAL & EXCELSA TREE HIKE

Today after a good breakfast we will head to Lake Sandoval, located in the National Reserve of Tambopata. It is the best way to see nature in its natural habitat including macaws, parrots, other bird species, monkeys, otters, caimans just to name a few. We will also have the opportunity to learn about different plant species, many which are used as natural medicines. The experience includes an easy walk along a wooden bridge for around 1 hour until we reach the lake, where we will canoe through the calm waters, observing monkeys, birds, caimans and with luck giant otters. The tour will take around 3 hours. We will then head back to the lodge for lunch and a good rest.

In the afternoon we will head out on a hike. Within the Amazon there are more than 1.2 million Brazil nut trees or bertholletia excelsa in an area of 2.5 million hectares, 20% of which are within the Tambopata National Reserve. To get to know these giant trees we will have a walk of 2  hours on very well preserved tracks. The Brazil nut is home of fauna and flora, which includes the añuje, one of the few animals that manages to break its coconuts and at the same time to be an expert in spreading its seeds.

We will then head back to the lodge for dinner.

After dinner (during dry season) we will enjoy a campfire, which is one of the most awaited activities by our visitors. Under the starry night in the jungle we will listen to local stories from our amazon. For those of you who would like to have the full immersion experience, we will then set up our tents and spend the night in the jungle! If not you are welcome to head back to the lodge for a good night sleep.

Note: should you wish to camp the night in the jungle, please let us know ahead of time, so we can make the necessary preparations.

  • DAY 5 – MONKEY ISLAND & NATIVE FAMILY

Today we will wake up and have breakfast at around 8am. As today is our final day it is important that we take all our bags with us as we will not be returning to the lodge.

At 9am we will head out to monkey island, locally known as Isla de los Monos, is a captivating sanctuary located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru’s Amazon rainforest. This island serves as a refuge for various monkey species, offering visitors a unique opportunity to observe these primates in their natural habitat.

NOTE: We recommend bringing bananas to Monkey Island with you as the monkeys often come to eat this treat.

From here we will take our boat to visit an indigenous village. We will learn about their local customs and traditions and even have the opportunity to try our hand at bow and arrow!

Following this cultural experience we will enjoy lunch at a nearby lodge. After lunch we will make our way back to Puerto Maldonado where you will be dropped off downtown or at the airport for those who have flights.

NOTE: Please let you know if you have an earlier flight so that we can make arrangements accordingly.
