Choquequirao Trail

4 Days | 3 Nights

Description

The Choquequrao treck is a beautiful four-day adventure into the Andean mountains. It is known as the “sister” ruins to Mach Picchu. Choquequirao is a Quechua word that means ‘Cradle of Gold’ and is located 3,080 meters above sea level in one of the fringes of the mountain Salkantay, north of the Apurímac River. Choquequirao is home to a variety of animals and birds such as the condor, foxes, vizcachas, pumas, hummingbirds, spectacled bears and the cock of the rocks. In addition, like Machu Picchu, there is a great variety of orchids.

We look forward to taking you on this wild adventure and having a Bloody Bueno time!

Itinerary

All tours can be done privately where you can set the departure time, add in or remove sites and most importantly go at your own pace. Please ask us for more information about availability and prices.

  • Day 1: Cusco – Chiquisca

We will pick you up from your hotel at around 6.00 a.m. and head towards Cachora, an Andean community located at the starting point of the trek where we meet our muleteers and horses at km 11. We start trekking downhill for 4 and a half hours towards our first campsite at Chiquisca, where we will have dinner and overnight in cabins.

  • Day 2: Chiquisca – Maranpata – Choquequirao

We will leave early today at 6.00 a.m. in the direction of Playa Rosalina, which will take about 1 hour. We then cross the Apurimac River and begin the climb to Santa Rosa, up a steep slope comprised of many switch backs. This climb takes approximately 2 and a half hours from Playa Rosalina to Santa Rosa baja, where we will have a rest. We will then continue the ascent to Maranpata for another 2 hours. It is important to leave early to avoid the heat from the sun.

After lunch we will enjoy a complete guided tour of the Choquequirao complex where we will visit the upper part (Hanan), and the lower parts (Urin), and some areas still covered with wild foliage and ready to be restored to the way it was in Inca times. We will also visit Saserdotal house and Pikiwasi. After the tour we will head back to Maranpata where we will have dinner and overnight in cabins.

  • Day 3: Maranpata- Chiquissca

We will leave Maranpata at around 7 a.m. and start our 4 and a half hour downhill hike back to Rosalina Beach. We will continue uphill for 1 hour and a half to Chiquiscca, where we will have lunch and time to rest. This will be followed by dinner and overnight stay in cabins.

  • Day 4: Chiquissca – Capuliyoc – Cusco

We leave camp after breakfast to begin the ascent of 4 hours and a half, making our way back to the Capuliyoc pass where our transport will be waiting for us to take us back to Cusco arriving late afternoon.
